This is pretty common on forums that wish to use postings in other formats. For instance, Dirt Rag uses the following disclaimer on their web site: "Disclaimer Dirt Rag can and will use any website content (including Forum discussion) for publication in the magazine." As long as the person creating the data understands they don't retain exclusive rights it should not be a problem. But there are surely other people, who would like to use this data for some other funny project, These people simply cannot use your data, since it is not licensed. They would have to find out, who created the specific piece of data and then ask him/her for permission. That's what I understand as the rules of copyright. btw: the wikipedia people use the GNU Free Documentation License to make sure, that other people can reuse their work. When users create these maps they intentionally make them publicly editable so that collective knowledge can make better maps: correct roads that arnt dirt any more, make notes of new mean dogs, ect. If this means it is under license, I would say it is some some sort of creative commons style license. Wikipedia is open license, sure, but it is also an editable amalgamation of data. This is also what the Dirt Road Database is. An editable amalgamation of data. The Database, per se, is simply a place to store links to all of these editable maps. I was simply using 'wikipedia of dirt' as sort of funny tag line. Further, in the next two days, the database will be transfering to a truly editable media wiki platform. Hope this helps. If not...
